Minnows Healing Salve

Saturday’s Minnows’ Recipe: All Purpose Healing Salve

This is one of my favorite DIY products I make with my oils, as it is very effective at soothing and assisting with healing, and it’s very versatile. From the kid’s cuts and scrapes to chapped lips and noses of cold season, we use it almost daily. Perfect for moisturizing dry skin all year long. I’m very grateful for this salve!

This recipe is made in four 4-oz jars, but you could make it in one 16 oz jar, or pour some into smaller containers like the one I used (1/2 oz plastic salve containers from AromaTools). I keep several around the house and few travel sizes handy.

1 Cup Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (Tropical Traditions Gold Label makes the silkiest salve!)

1 Cup Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

4 T. Beeswax Pastilles

1/2 t. vitamin e oil (optional)
To each jar add:

10 drops Lavender
10 drops Frankincense

8 drops Lemon

6 drops Melaleuca

1/2 teaspoon Vitamin e oil (optional)

Fills {4} – 4 oz glass mason jars or small glass jars of choice.
Melt the coconut, olive oil and beeswax in a warm water bath, stirring with a knife every few minutes until melted.

This will take at least 15 min, you want a slow melt.
Add the EOs to the empty jars and pour into glass jars of your choice and let cool.
Put a paper towel over the jars while cooling and wait to cover with lids until completely cooled down. Shelf life is approximately 8 months with the vitamin e oil added.
If you try this out, let me know how you like it!

Homemade Hand Sanitizer (Alcohol-Free)

My 3 year old daughter empowered herself when she made her own DIY alcohol free hand sanitizer!

My daughter has horrible reactions to conventional hand sanitizers that contain alcohol. It makes her hands burn. I needed something effective yet gentle so I went to my local health food store to see what was already on the market.

I actually found some pretty great items, problem was, was that they were really expensive. I live by the ideology “Quality over Quantity” but I honestly didn’t want to spend $15 on a 1oz bottle of something that had ingredients I couldn’t pronounce especially when I knew I had essential oils and other natural products in the home that would work just as well.

To the drawing board I went. I researched how to make a base hand sanitizer, alcohol free. I found out all it was, was aloe vera and witch hazel. Next was I needed to find ingredients that would that would combat germs. OnGuard, Melaleuca and Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) I personally recommend NutriBiotic Brand.

What is grapefruit seed extract you ask? Commonly referred to as simply “GSE” grapefruit seed extract is a general anti-microbial that when applied to the skin works as an anti-septic. It can also be taken internally as a daily regiment or if you are feeling under the weather.

It’s important to remember that drug interactions with grapefruit juice are well documented. The chemistry of the grapefruit varies by the species, the growing conditions, and the process used to extract the juice. Before adding grapefruit to your diet or your list of natural medicines, check with your healthcare provider if you take medications.

And that’s it… aloe vera, witch hazel, some oils and some GSE… oh! you need a vessel. Store your hand sanitizer in a glass bottle with a pump spray for easy application, or you can keep it always on you with this handy little tool!

The method to the madness:

In a 2oz spray bottle…

2T witch hazel

4T aloe vera

5 drops grapefruit seed extract (GSE)

5 drops melaleuca

15 drops OnGuard

 fill the rest with water

It’s the little things that matter, she’s my little thing and she matters.
