My son has had skin issues since he was born. Horrible cradle cap and red patchy cheeks were the beginning then it spread to his arms and legs. Any skin that was exposed, it was a scratch fest leaving him raw and red. It would wake him up at night. I had to keep him completely covered, especially during the summer months. I was devastated. I removed foods from my diet since he’s still nursing (at the tender age of two), thinking I was the culprit; dairy, wheat, soy, meat. Nothing changed his situation. We were at the doctor’s office monthly refilling prescriptions, getting new prescriptions, soap and lotion samples… nothing was working well enough that we could go a day without using it. Until I was about 10, I had eczema and I can remember always using topical steroids in my armpit. As quickly as it came, one day I just grew out of it. I didn’t want my son to be in a cyclical trap of prescription meds and I’d spent hundreds on stuff that just ended up in the trash. It had been a year, I needed solutions.
I had a product that honestly worked well. It was just really expensive. I looked at the ingredients and found that they were all natural things that I could buy at my local honeybee hive. I was inspired to create my own balm. I began researching essential oils that were cleansing, soothing and healing to the skin. It took me months to get a formula down that was consistent in its effectivity. I felt empowered!
If you’re feeling powerless towards your love one (big or little) or you have a personal issue with skin irratations, I have a balm for you with oil recommendations that may eliminate a couple co-pays or doctor visits for you.
Soothing balm for skin itratations:
1/4 c coconut oil* (not fractionated – it won’t set as firm if you use FCO)
1/8 c shea butter
1 tbsp beeswax**
10 drops essential oils
*I actually use 1/4 c of calendula infused castor oil. Take a mason jar, fill with dried flowers, cover with oil, lid, store in window sill for 4-6 weeks. Shake it up every once in a while. Strain, label, use.
**Double the beeswax if the oil you’re using doesn’t set when cold
For larger or smaller batches here’s the ratio:
4 parts oil
2 parts shea butter
1 part beeswax
Combine first three ingredients in a small glass dish.
Heat some water in a small pot over low-med heat.
Place glass dish in water to melt ingredients, stir occasionally.
Once completed melted and combined, pour into a suitable container. I like to upcycle empty baby food jars.
Add essential oils and stir.
Allow to cool.
Store with lid on in a dark place.
To use, rub a small amount onto fingertips and massage into skin.
For extra protection at night, we will draw a bath of warm water adding 2C ACV. I’ll apply balm immediately after bath when pores are still open. We don’t always use soap in our baths but when we do we use Dr. Bronners -Baby
For the essential oils in my creation I used a blend of:
2melaleuca, 2cedarwood, 1lavender, 2frankincense, 1birch, 1geranium & 1helichrysum
All of these oils have additional uses and benefits outside of soothing skin irratations. The versatility of essential oils is uncanny.
